Whatever the source of stress is, physical or emotional, body reacts by producing adrenaline, the hormone that causes a cascade of other hormonal and neural responses, which occur throughout the body and prepares us "either to fight or to leave". For physical stress, these reactions are very useful, usually last awhile, and then the hormone levels return to normal.

Under Pressure...

The overall impact of stress on nutritional needs is not fully understood, but it is known that under stress conditions, metabolism may come under pressure. A consequent effect is possible: reduction of immune defense which makes us more vulnerable to infections and diseases.

To create adrenaline, vitamin C is needed. When the adrenaline levels are high during periods of major stress, body needs more vitamin C. Humans depend on their diet. If the appropriate diet is not achieved through the consumption of many foods rich in vitamin C, like oranges, kiwi fruit, berries, peppers, potatoes and broccoli, some body parts, like the immune system, may become scarce.

  When we are in long-term stress, it is good to strengthen our immune system by eating plenty of foods rich in beta carotene (a precursor of vitamin A), such as carrots, dark green vegetables and yellow and orange fruits.

The Power of Protein

The body's needs for protein can also increase when we are in constant stress. It is therefore very important to eat fish, chicken, turkey, lean red meats, eggs, milk or legumes at meals. A diet that is deficient in protein can markedly reduce the immune protection. Fatty fish like salmon, trout, tuna and sardines are very good choices because they provide essential fats, important for the fluidity of blood. Thus, they can help reverse the effects of adrenaline in blood clotting.

The diet during stress is, in fact, eating a healthy balanced diet through wise food choices. Regular exercise is also important because it can promote the production of endorphins (natural mood enhancers) and improve fitness.
