Pharmacist & Hypertension

Hypertension is a consistently elevated blood pressure above normal limits. Blood pressure is recorded by two numbers. The largest number is the systolic pressure, known as the great pressure and the lower is the diastolic pressure or low pressure. Values greater than 140mmHg / 90mmHg are considered as hypertension.
95% of people suffering from high blood pressure is caused by factors such as heredity, obesity, increased salt intake and sedentary.
Studies have shown that about 1 in 4 adults and, after 65 years, 1 out of 2 people suffer from hypertension.
Hypertension increases the risk for stroke, heart attack and heart failure, sudden death, kidney damage, blockage of the arteries of the legs etc.
Since high blood pressure usually is not felt and causes no discomfort, it is extremely important that early diagnosis and effective treatment is applied.
Role of the Pharmacist
- Measurement of pressure in the pharmacy and patient awareness of hypertension, since a large percentage of sufferers are undiagnosed.
- To provide training in the proper measurement of blood pressure.
- Guidance on proper drug administration and updating of the treating physician when the goal is not achieved.
- Advice on exercise, nutrition and weight loss
- Administration of nutritional supplements that help the patient to achieve the above goals.
