Eye and Eye Make up Allergies

The vast majority of women frequently use various make up products to optimize their looks and specifically the eye area. Most women rarely encounter any problems, a significant few may face allergic reactions due to cosmetic preservatives causing, itchiness, tears and red eyes. There is often swelling, dry flaky skin around the eyes. Should you encounter such reactions we strongly recommend discontinuation of the suspicious products and adopting the usage of hypoallergenic cosmetics.
Cosmetic ingredients
You should be cautious on the selected ingredients contained on eye products. We here outline ingredients that are more probably related to eye zone allergies.
Colours (dyes and colours)
To ensure and guarantee a safe eye cosmetic all manufacturers should use allowed and safe-tested colours that exceed toxicity, cancerous and mutation qualifications.
Waxes natural or synthetic
Coloured make up products such as mascara, shadows and pencil need to undergo plasticisation and volumisation properties to ease their application and gain shine. Waxes are a major ingredient for this process. Waxes are rarely responsible for allergies and are susceptible to contamination, than natural gum to bacteria and fungi. Bee’s wax though has been proven to cause allergic contact dermatitis.
Chalk
This powder is contained in eye shadow products. It is non-toxic but can be a source of contamination by fungi and bacteria (cocci). It has been known to cause allergic reactions.
Gum, natural or synthetic
They are found on powders, masks and other coloured make up products. Natural gums are very often contaminated by bacteria and fungi. Most manufacturers prefer synthetic gums due to this fact.
Gum karaya
It has been accused of causing a variety of allergic reactions, such as allergic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma. It is not an option in hypoallergenic formulations.
Fluorescein
An approved dye used for coloured cosmetics. Fluorescein chemical derivatives are light sensitising agents that may cause photosensitivity.
Keep in mind that pharmacy cosmetics are generally safe, of hypoallergenic formulations that have undergone all necessary quality controls. There are even available eye products, specially designed to meet all sensitivity requirements, containing ingredients free of causing discomfort or skin reactions.
