Acne is a very common skin condition that occurs in adolescents and adults. It is disease of the sebaceous glands that are in big amounts on the face, back and chest. Acne begins during adolescence during which first offensive pimples appear.

The types of pimples in acne are: comedones (black-white), the papules (red spots), the pustules (pimples with pus) and cysts. Pustules and cysts when they leave the skin may create scars. In many people acne flares up after the age of 30 and up to the age of 60 it may cause problems to the face.

Acne is curable, provided that the person shows patience and cooperation to the dermatologist. Treatment includes topical formulations to prevent new lesions (eg azelate, retinoic acid) or oral medications (antibiotics, eg tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline).

In addition, your pharmacist may give you the following tips to help you control acne:

  • Clean your face gently once or twice on a daily basis, with mild cleanser and lukewarm water. On the contrary, excessive washing, can irritate skin and worsen acne.
  •  Wash your hair daily, if your hair is oily, so as to prevent the oil reaching the skin.
  •  Use make up and skin products containing no oil (oil free).
  •  Avoid  hair products (such as spray or gel, from touching the skin.
